Is Pilates Strength Training?

Pilates, often associated with flexibility and posture improvement, sometimes raises questions about the level of strength training it provides. The answer? Absolutely!

While Pilates may not conjure images of heavy weights and muscle bulking, it is a powerful form of training. The essence of Pilates lies in strengthening the deeper muscles, particularly those around the abdomen, lower back, and pelvic area.

The exercises in Pilates emphasize control, concentration, and precision. Through controlled movements, you work on building strength in specific muscle groups. This results not only in a strong core but also in an overall improvement in muscle strength and endurance.

What sets Pilates apart is its focus on developing functional strength—the strength you need for daily activities. Whether you're carrying groceries, sitting at your desk, or engaging in active pursuits, Pilates strengthens the muscles required for moving effortlessly and with a reduced risk of injury.

In short, Pilates is not just a journey toward flexibility and better posture; it is also an effective form of strength training. So, if you're looking for a well-rounded workout that promotes strength, flexibility, and body awareness, Pilates is definitely for you!

At Pilates Remix, I often mix Pilates with functional strength training and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) to bring about a well-balanced workout for the entire body. Look at the roster and choose a class that fits for you!
